In 1970, Nasi Sela, which is a rice-based dish, was very popular because at that time rice was very rare. Therefore, Nasi Sela was a new alternative staple food. It was rice served with "sela" or small cut of sweet potato or cassava to increase the amount of rice.

Nasi Sela became an alternative food in times of crisis. This has become a very delicious and intriguing meal until today. Nasi Sela actually has a good nutritional content. This is because of sweet potatoes dominating the rice.

This Karangasem typical food can be found anywhere. It is available every where throughout Bali. Therefore, you do not have to bother to go to particular place to experience its delicacy. Nowadays, Nasi Sela has experienced many changes in terms of the varied ways this dish is served. However, if you want to try the original one, you have to visit Karangasem Regency, where this food is originated.

There is a variation with small pieces of Ayam Betutu. There is also those served with "urap" (salad dish of steamed vegetables such as bean sprout, spinach, and water spinach mixed with seasoned and spiced grated coconut for dressing) with yard-long bean, and small shrimp which is commonly called "grago".

If you would like to taste Nasi Sela, you can visit Warung Mek Luh owned by Nengah Sukerti, a former member of Bali's Regional House of People's Representatives (DPRD), who still preserves Nasi Sela. She has been in the Balinese food business for a quite long time, approximately for about 15 years. She is also very vigorous in the marketing of Nasi Sela and has been promoting it for a long time to the foreign tourists. The location is quite accessible which is right in front of RSUD Karangasem. 

The price of Nasi Sela is varied. But, only in this shop you can still save some money. The price is still very affordable in this place. This also becomes one reason why Bali is always loved by people around the world. There are still many culinary with affordable price for everyone even though there are many tourists who come.
