Jatiluwih Terraced Rice Fields
Agriculture has been the most important part of Balinese life for years. No wonder, besides being surrounded by mountains and beaches, Bali Island is also surrounded by a wide stretch of beautiful terraced rice fields, especially in Tabanan. There are at least three famous isolated rice fields in Bali, namely the
Busungbiu Terrace Rice Fields in Buleleng,
the Tegalalang Terrace Rice Fields in Gianyar, and the Jatiluwih Terasering Rice Fields in Tabanan.
Jatiluwih Terasering Rice Field has an area of around 53,000 hectares. With this vast land size, the Jatiluwih Terraced Rice Field becomes the largest terraced rice field in Bali. Apart from the large land size, the unique shape of rice fields such as small steps when viewed from a distance is the main attraction for tourists to come to this rice field area. So as far as your eye can see, you will only find a magnificent view of terraced rice fields. This stunning landscape allows you to walk along the rice field. Don't forget to mark on each trail, so you won’t get lost.
The Jatiluwih Terasering Rice Field is a good example of how to manage an irrigation system in Bali known as Subak. With a system that has existed since the 9th century, farmers will share water flowing from one field to another. This subak irrigation system also allows farmers to meet their water needs. This is one of the reasons UNESCO established the Jatiluwih Terraced Rice Field as World Cultural Heritage in 2012. Cool, right! Anyway, the Subak irrigation system was also formed based on the manifestation of the Tri Hita Karana philosophy that links harmony between humans, nature, and God.
