M 4,9 Earthquake hits Bali! Stay Calm and Know How to Save Yourselves

Light earthquake was hitting Bali Region this morning on August 12, 2019. The 4,9-magnitude earthquake was reported by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, occurred around 06:08 local time. Followed by 3 aftershocks with the epicenter at a distance of 189 kilometers southwest of Negara, Jembrana. The Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Center of BMKG added that this 68kilometers depth earthquake is categorized as shallow hypocenter. Based on the analysis results of BMKG, there has been a movement of plates with greater mass causing Indo-Australian plates to infiltrate under the Eurasian plate.

Please stay calm, when either tectonic or volcanic earthquake happen around you. Recognize these following steps in order to save yourself from the undesirable things that may happen once the earthquake hits. Here are the steps you need to take when the earthquake occurs: 

1. Stay Calm and Focus

Stay calm so you can focus on taking the right steps when the earthquake happens. Don’t be panic in taking an action. Take a deep breath and remember carefully what should be done first or important things that must be saved later on.

2. Find a Safest Spot


If you are happened to be at indoors, take shelter on a stable table so you can protect your body until the earthquake stops. Stay away from fragile objects, furniture or building parts such as those made of glass and wooden frames. It is also not recommended to use the elevator when the shocks occur. The building's electrical system will automatically disconnect and it is quite dangerous if you use the elevator to get out of the building immediately, so use the stairs instead to exit the building.

Please cover your face and head first. When you are outside the building, avoid places that are prone to collapse. Look for land that is spacious and away from steep slopes. 

Other spots that should be avoided when the earthquake are bridges, under trees and around electric power poles. Stop for a moment and find a safe place if you are riding a vehicle when the earthquake hits.  

3. Avoided Several Activity

Activities that should be avoided during the earthquake are light a fire and extreme outdoor activities in vulnerable areas, such as mountains and beaches. When the earthquake occurs, stay away from the coast and move to a higher place. And if you are in the active volcanic mountain range, just immediately find the safest spot.
