Nyakan Diwang, A Unique Cooking Tradition In Buleleng.
Indonesia is rich in culture, so many traditions and cultures can be learned and maintained. And of course, those cultural heritages should be preserved from generation to generation. In Bali alone, there are many traditions that you can learn, such as Nyakan Diwang.
What Is Nyakan Diwang?
One of the interesting rituals of ancestral heritage is Nyakan Diwang. This is the tradition of the people of Banjar Village, Banjar District, Buleleng Regency. This tradition has been handed down for generations, and is still being carried out today. Usually, it is held a day after Nyepi.
When Nyakan Diwang was held, residents of Banjar Village will cook on the side of the village road. Yes, just like the name ‘Nyakan Diwang’, which means cooking outside the house. Uniquely, this celebration starts at 3:00 a.m. until 7:00 a.m. If the clock has shown exactly at 3:00 in the morning, then Kulkul will be beaten as a sign that Nyakan Diwang will begin soon. At that time, all village communities will prepare all their needs.
In this tradition, the residents will usually cook simple food using firewood. Although this tradition is not mandatory, almost all people continue to do Nyakan Diwang because of the cohesiveness that exists between the residents. This tradition is there to clean the house, especially in the kitchen, after "catur brata penyepian".
There is something unique when this tradition takes place. When one family member is cooking, other family members will hold a mat and sit back while enjoying the warm morning coffee and chatting with neighbors. Now, this is where harmony between the residents will be clearly visible. Of course this has become very special, especially for the residents who migrate, and far back to the village to celebrate Nyepi and Nyakan Diwang. Certainly, this warm moment is very valuable.
If you want to see this unique tradition, you should choose lodging places around Banjar Village, because this tradition starts early in the morning. You can also stay at a resident's house and help prepare the needs for Nyakan Diwang. Residents will be very happy if there are visitors from outside Bali who are interested in this culture.
