Rejang, The Holy Dance To Delight Gods And Spirits.

Balinese dance is part of tradition and religious ceremony for the local people. One of the most beautiful dances is Rejang. Dressed in great costumes with headdresses, this dance is traditionally performed by young women at a ceremony in the inner courtyard of the temple. This dance is also one of the holiest sacrificial dances to entertain the visiting gods and spirits.

Performed without real choreography nor the complicated moves of a Legong – movements and expressive gestures, a form of Balinese dance. When it’s performed, you will see a slow group dance with a simple yet graceful motion. The dancers wear white and gold clothes with headdress adorned with flowers. In some villages, the headdresses are almost a meter high! Also, the girls are sometimes spruced up in gold and decorated with huge amounts of fresh flowers.

Again, the dancers don’t need prior training. The local people believe, the spirit of ngayah (cooperation) will guide them to perform the dance harmoniously. The dance is usually accompanied by Balinese traditional musical instruments, such as Gong Kebyar and Gamelan Selonding. These musical instruments will definitely add the charm and magical nuance of Rejang dance.



It’s quite hard to find this dance, because it’s limited only to be performed during a ceremony. But trust us, this dance is always worth the hunt. Rejang itself means “offering”, which is basically offering themselves to the gods. There were even some cases that the dancers lose themselves in the ceremonial. Where they have a transcendental experience and reach a higher state of consciousness.

Local people believe that Rejang has an important role in a ceremony. The dancers are said to be the heavenly maidens. They come to earth to welcome the gods to bestow protection and prosperity on earth. This dance is usually taught from generation to generation, so that the tradition doesn’t stop.
