The Grandeur Of Batuan’s Gamelan Gambuh.

Gamelan Gambuh has already existed in Bali since 929 Saka year or 1007 AD. Gambuh itself is an ancient form of Balinese dance-drama, and the oldest Balinese performing arts. According to the history, this traditional Balinese ensemble was played to accompany Gambuh dance. Precisely at the beginning of the 11th century in the year 1007 AD, during the reign of Sri Udayana and his wife, Sri Gunapriya Dharmapatni, in Bali. Gamelan Gambuh has experience its enchantment in the old days.

However, when the Dutch colonised Bali in 1908, the glamour of the royal courts disappeared. Gambuh started to fade from time to time. Until today, Gambuh is in danger of extinction and only survives in several villages. One of the villages in Bali that is still preserving Gamelan Gambuh is Batuan Village, Sukawati, Gianyar.

Pura Puseh Batuan Village is one of the most well-known place that’s still maintaining and exhibiting this ancient culture. This magnificent and artistic temple is located in Batuan Village, Sukawati District, Gianyar Regency, Bali. This temple is one of the ancient heritage from the stone age. It’s the oldest temple in Bali, built in 944 Saka or around 1020 AD. The beauty of this temple can be an actual proof of how superior the culture is at that time. Pura Puseh Batuan Gianyar can be reached within 30 minutes driving from Denpasar. It is free of charge, so you don’t have to pay an entrance fee. But don’t forget, you have to wear a piece of cloth to enter the shrine which is rented around the parking area.

Pura Puseh Batuan Village is located approximately 8km - 10km from Ubud Centre or Ubud Market. From there, you should head to the south, precisely at Jalan Raya Batuan, Batuan, Sukawati, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80582
