Petitenget Temple

According to Balinese, Petitenget comes from two words. Crate and Tenget, Crate means a place or container for storing something, whereas Tenget means haunted. This name emerged from the origin of temples that were built by the people of Bali in the past.

The Balinese believe that Petitenget Temple is a temple to ward off evil spirits and negative energy that can damage the surrounding environment. According to Balinese belief, around the 16th century, there was a priest named Dhang Hyang Dwijendra who came to the Petitenget area. Then Dhang Hyang Dwijendra met with Buto Ijo, a giant with scary face, who lived in that area.

But with the magic of Dhang Hyang Dwijendra, Buto Ijo was asked to guard a chest, while Dhang Hyang Dwijendra went to meditate (moksa). Buto Ijo obeyed the request and made anyone who approached the Petitenget area became ill. Not only that, epidemics began to spread to the residents who tried to live in this area.

With this incident, someone came to Dhang Hyang Dwijendra. Dhang Hyang Dwijendra then gave the advice to build a temple around Petitenget. After that, with the construction of the temple, the residents no longer get the plague.
